More Lara Bingle

The other day I got a huge spike in traffic which pleasantly surprised me. When I checked my stats in WordPress, delight turned to chagrin when it was all related to a post I did where I mentioned Lara Bingle. The post wasn’t even about her but I put in a picture for effect.

Imaging how unpleasantly surprised all those searchers would have been to have seen my mug and a bunch of stuff about kayaks. Now, Lara’s a pretty kid and she’s together with upcoming Oz cricket legend Michael Clark but she’s not very interesting really. The spike in traffic was a result of the press around the death of her father to cancer and having recently lost my mother to this disease I have genuine empathy for her loss.

But other than some unspectacular tourism campaigns, a famous partner and her recent loss there’s not much else to write home about. So why does she get so bloody famous? In the kayaking world there are so many great adventurers deserving of fame and admiration, paddlers who push the limits and even die attempting them but all the glory continues to go to celebrity for celebrity’s sake. Nigel Dennis was treated with reverential regard at our Rock n Roll but nobody outside sea kayaking would know who he is. Andrew McAuley is commonly known in Australia as ‘that bloke who died trying to row to New Zealand’. Cringe.

No offense, Lara, you’re a beaut looking girl and good luck to you but…gawd…can you do something else?

There’s no point to this post, just a rant.
